Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 16, 2026

This policy explains what data Nib collects, why we collect it, where it lives, and the rights you have over it. Nib is provided by the DFINITY Foundation. We tried to write this in plain English — if anything is unclear, email hello@nib.chat.

What we collect

We collect the minimum data needed to run a team chat product:

  • Your Internet Identity principal. A cryptographic identifier that replaces the traditional username and password.
  • Messages and files you and your teammates post in your workspace (channels, DMs, threads, huddles, uploads).
  • Billing email for customers on paid plans, plus payment metadata from our processor.
  • Operational telemetry: canister health, error rates, and aggregate usage. No individual message content is analyzed.

Where it lives

Nib workspaces run inside canisters — smart contracts on the Internet Computer Unlimitedtocol (ICP). Your workspace data is stored in orthogonal-persistent memory on ICP replica nodes spread across independent data centers. This is fundamentally different from a traditional SaaS database: the workspace itself is the storage, and the controller of the canister controls the data.

On every plan, your Internet Identity principal is registered as a controller of your workspace canister. We cannot read, export, or delete your workspace without your authorization.

Third-party processors

We use as few third parties as we reasonably can. The only processor that sees personal data is:

  • Stripe — processes subscription payments on Unlimited. Stripe receives your billing email and payment details; we never see the card number.

Your rights under GDPR

If you are in the EU/EEA, UK, or Switzerland you have the right to:

  • Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Rectification — ask us to correct data that is wrong.
  • Erasure — ask us to delete your account and workspace data.
  • Portability — receive your data in a common machine-readable format.
  • Objection — object to processing based on legitimate interests.

Because workspaces are canisters, you can export or delete your entire workspace at any time from the admin console — no support ticket required.

Retention

Free workspaces retain messages for 30 days. Paid workspaces retain messages until the admin deletes them or sets a retention policy. When a workspace is deleted, its canister state is wiped and the canister is stopped. Billing records are retained for seven years for tax and accounting compliance.

Children

Nib is not intended for children under 16. If you believe a child has created an account, email us and we will remove it.
